From fear of failure to atychiphobia in athletes and physical education students: a systematic review and three-level meta-analysis of correlates
Year: 2026
Type: review
Abstract: This registration describes a systematic review and three-level meta-analysis that will pool zero-order correlations between fear of failure and its correlates in athletes, sport officials and physical education students. Fear of failure is treated as a continuum, and atychiphobia is used for its clinical end, marked by persistent and disproportionate fear of failing with avoidance, endured distress and impairment. The review will also test six moderators, rate the certainty of every pooled association with the GRADE approach, and describe separately the evidence on athletes with clinically elevated fear of failure. A matching record has been prepared for the International Prospective Register of Systematic Reviews (PROSPERO), and the two records will be cross-linked once the PROSPERO number is issued.
