Abstract: Reading literacy among Indonesian elementary school students remains low, as reflected in the 2022 PISA score, which is well below the OECD average. This study describes the ability of fourth-grade students at SDN 100150 Purbatua to identify the main idea and the moral message of the narrative text "Suka dan Tidak Suka" simultaneously, and identifies the internal and external factors influencing that ability. A mixed-methods sequential explanatory design was employed: a quantitative test administered to all 18 students (total sampling), followed by qualitative interviews with six purposively selected students and the classroom teacher as a supporting informant. The test instrument was validated through expert judgment by two validators. Main-idea ability fell into the moderate category (M = 67.78): two students (11.11%) were very good, two (11.11%) good, ten (55.56%) adequate, and two (11.11%) poor. Moral-message ability fell into the high category (M = 81.67): ten students (55.56%) were very good, six (33.33%) adequate, and two (11.11%) poor. Qualitative data showed that the lower main-idea performance stemmed from difficulty distinguishing topic sentences from supporting sentences, whereas the stronger moral-message performance was supported by students' emotional closeness to the story's conflict. Internal factors (interest, motivation, concentration, vocabulary mastery, comprehension of the text) and external factors (parental support, learning environment, availability of reading materials, teaching strategy) interacted to shape this pattern. These findings underline the need for explicit, scaffolded reading comprehension instruction at the elementary level.
