The Implementation of Individual Counseling Programs in Improving the Social Interaction Skills of Introverted Students

Year: 2026
Type: article
Abstract: This study aims to describe the implementation of individual counseling services, as well as the supporting and inhibiting factors in improving the social skills of introverted students at Sigi State High School 6. This study employs a qualitative approach using a case study design. The research subject is a student with the initials AQ, with the Guidance and Counseling teacher and the homeroom teacher serving as supporting informants. Data were collected through observation, interviews, and documentation. Individual counseling sessions were conducted in two sessions focused on identifying difficulties in interacting, building self-confidence, and increasing the courage to communicate. Before counseling, AQ tended to keep to himself, lacked self-confidence, and had difficulty interacting with peers. After counseling, AQ demonstrated positive changes, such as being more willing to interact and participate in group activities. Supporting factors included a supportive counseling approach and support from the school environment, while inhibiting factors included shyness, a lack of self-confidence in the early stages, and time constraints. The findings describe positive changes in AQ’s social interaction following two individual counseling sessions, including greater willingness to initiate communication and participate in group activities. Because the study involved a single participant, the findings should be interpreted within the context of this case.
