Human Control While AI Is Acting
Year: 2026
Type: preprint
Abstract: A design commentary on Anthropic's 2026 Public Benefit Report, examining what meaningful human control requires while AI systems are acting. It considers the relationship between system speed, human understanding, intervention, and irreversible consequences, and proposes four questions for evaluating whether people retain practical authority. The commentary draws on my earlier working paper, Designing Stabilizing Mechanisms at Critical Transitions (2026).
