Abstract: We give an introduction to and an overview of holographic approaches to QCD and hadron structure. After an introduction to the string-theoretic foundations of holographic QCD, we review the predictions of top-down and bottom-up models for the phenomenology of mesons, baryons, and glueballs. We focus on the top-down model following from probe flavor branes in the Witten model of low-energy Yang-Mills theory and, in the more phenomenological approach of bottom-up models, mostly on minimal models based on five-dimensional anti-de Sitter space, which also implement global symmetries and their anomalies consistently, but allow the high-energy behavior to better match real QCD.
