Abstract: Popular physics concepts such as the Big Bang, black holes, quasars, blazars, elementary particles and the Solar System cannot be observed directly or reproduced in a classroom, which makes visual and audiovisual materials essential for teaching them. Following a design-based research approach, an inventory of websites, library holdings, lecture notes, articles and documentary films was collected through document analysis, filtered by selection criteria and processed according to fifteen design principles. The resulting resource organises concepts alphabetically and provides them in .pdf, .swf and video formats via DVD and the web. The design principles are mapped onto Mayer’s cognitive theory of multimedia learning, cognitive load theory and Gestalt laws of perception; published evidence shows large median effect sizes (d ≥ 0.8) for most of the principles applied.
