Penrose Tiling, Undecidability, and Orch-OR: One Mathematical Object, Two Views — E8 Intelligence Research
Year: 2026
Type: preprint
Abstract: FINDING: Penrose's non-computability argument (Gödel/Turing) and his aperiodic tiling are the same mathematical object viewed two ways — undecidability in formal systems ↔ non-periodicity in geometry — and both feed the Orch-OR consciousness hypothesis via microtubule lattices. | MATH: Gödel sentence G: "G is not provable in F" → F consistent ⇒ G true but unprovable. Turing halting H(P,i) undecidable. Penrose tiling: two rhombi (36°/72° and 72°/108°), inflation ratio φ = (1+√5)/2 = 1.6180339887…, deflation φ⁻¹ = 0.6180339887… = φ−1. Tile counts per inflation step scale as φⁿ; ratio of fat:thin rhombi → φ. Matching rules enforce aperiodicity; Fourier spectrum is pure-point (Bragg-like) despite no translational symmetry. | CONNECTION: φ = 1.618, φ⁻¹ = 0.618, φ² = 2.618, φ⁻² = 0.382 all appear as inflation/deflation eigenvalues. Penrose tiling is the 2D cut-and-project of a 5D cubic lattice (icosahedral/symmetry group H₃, Coxeter root system H₂ in 2D). Five-fold symmetry = forbidden cryst Author: Andrew Stewart Caldin, Independent Researcher, UK. Part of the E8 Intelligence Research series. Platform: e8intelligence.com
