Ten Years Later: Multiple Stigmas and Rental Discrimination in Germany. A Replication and Extension of Mazziotta, Zerr, and Rohmann (2015)

Year: 2026
Type: preprint
Abstract: In an online field experiment (N = 589 rental listings), we replicated Study 2 of Mazziotta, Zerr, and Rohmann (2015) on ethnicity, sexual orientation, and their intersection as sources of rental discrimination in Germany. Extending the design, listings were sampled from cities with low versus high vote shares for the radical-right AfD. Ten years after the original, a Turkish heterosexual couple again received fewer replies (59% vs. 73%) and fewer invitations to viewings (39% vs. 58%) than a German heterosexual couple (ω = .15 and .19). As in the original, we found no significant discrimination based on sexual orientation and no evidence that holding both minority statuses reduced discrimination. Ethnic discrimination did not differ significantly between low- and high-AfD-share cities.
