Abstract: Predicting the operating temperature of lithium-ion batteries has an important effect on the performance and safety of the electric vehicle and the batteries as well. This study examines the thermal behavior of a 50Ah prismatic lithium iron phosphate (LiFePO4 , LFP) battery by adopting a coupled 2RC electric model with a three dimensional analytical thermal resistance model. The developed model is then extended to investigate the thermal behavior of a battery module composed of five cells connected in series. The OCV and impedance terms of the battery are identified experimentally using commonly adopted techniques. Meanwhile, the parameters of the thermal model, such as thermal resistances and capacity, are determined using a simple and cost-effective technique, accompanied by several assumptions. The identified parameters are then employed within the models to predict the operating temperature, of both single cell and battery module levels, during a scenario consisting of dynamic profiles followed by a charging phase that gives an approximate representation of electric vehicles in car sharing service. The developed models predicted temperatures with a discrepancy 1°C for the single cell case, and of 3°C for the battery module.
