Abstract: A poem can express the uncertainty of departure. A painting can portray a harbour, a river or the labour of fishers. A song can preserve the memory of migration. A ritual can connect a community to a particular shore. A meal can bring together aquatic food, craft knowledge and family memory. These expressions are different, but they share an important characteristic: they show that the sea and rivers are part of human life in ways that extend beyond their economic or strategic uses.
