Year: 2026

Study design: Observational Study
Abstract: This study examines the correlation between Emotional Intelligence (EI) and Digital Communication Competence (DCC) among S6 students in the English Excellence Track at the Faculty of Letters and Human Sciences, Mohammed First University, with attention to communication in academic and future professional contexts. Drawing on Salovey and Mayer’s (1997) Ability Model of EI and the DigComp 2.1 framework, the study explores whether students with higher EI demonstrate greater effectiveness in digital communication. An explanatory sequential mixed-method design was adopted. The quantitative phase involved a questionnaire administered to 65 students, measuring the four EI dimensions and key aspects of DCC. Pearson’s correlation coefficient was used to examine the relationship between the two constructs. The qualitative phase included interviews with 10 participants, analysed following Braun and Clarke’s six-phase approach (2006), to support the interpretation of the quantitative findings. The study found a strong positive relationship between the two research variables, with higher EI associated with stronger digital communication competence and professional readiness.
