Abstract: The discussion regarding the concept of destiny (takdir) is significant, as it is intrinsically linked to the study of aqidah (Islamic creed). The terms takdir and nasib (fate) are frequently used in Indonesian discourse, often understood simply as "fate." This article aims to compare Nurcholish Madjid’s conception of destiny with classical conceptions. The study employs a qualitative approach, specifically a comparative analysis of thought. Data collection was conducted through library research, drawing from the Nurcholish Madjid Encyclopedia as well as various journals, articles, and books relevant to the subject. The findings indicate that: (1) classical conceptions of destiny are categorized into the Jabariyah, Qadariyah, and Ahl al-Sunnah wa al-Jama’ah (Aswaja) schools of thought; (2) Nurcholish Madjid’s perspective on destiny is rooted in the principle of *tawhid* (the oneness of God); and (3) Nurcholish Madjid views destiny as sunnatullah (God’s established laws); a concept that remains fluid in the context of human action, yet functions with absolute certainty regarding the "movements" of the natural world.
