Une brèche? Anton Bopp's Charge-Vortex Electron and the Prospect of a Reality-Oriented Physics

Year: 2026
Type: article
Abstract: Twentieth-century physics achieved much of its precision while setting aside the question of what its formalism describes. A minority tradition, running from Schrödinger's charge-density interpretation of the wave function and Madelung's hydrodynamic reformulation through de Broglie, Bohm, and stochastic electrodynamics, has continued to ask for a picture of physical reality behind the equations, and recent hydrodynamic quantum analogs have revived interest in such pictures. The unpublished manuscripts of Anton Bopp (1900–1971), written between 1941 and 1961, belong to this tradition. Bopp conceived the electron as a charge vortex (Ladungswirbel) at the boundary between radiation and matter, and from this conception proposed a closure relation linking the elementary charge, the electron mass, Planck's constant, the speed of light, and the gravitational constant through a characteristic frequency ν_zp ≈ 0.0605390 Hz. This essay asks whether that impulse could mark a breach, une brèche, towards a physics oriented once again to a physical picture of reality, intuitive understanding, and meaning. It argues that the opening is real, that history shows what a breach requires, namely a prediction that could fail and yet survives experimental test, and that the conditions for such a test have now been prepared.
