Abstract: This article examines the linguo-cognitive features of primary and secondary nomination of rodent zoonyms in the French language, as well as the primary and secondary zoonymic images formed on their basis. The study explores the process of primary zoonymic image formation resulting from the selection by the speech community of salient features from the real biological, perceptual, ecological, and ethological characteristics of a zoonym. It also analyzes the mechanisms of connotativization of the primary image, its anthropocentric projection onto human characteristics, and the emergence of secondary nomination. Based on such French zoonyms as rat, souris, castor, écureuil, hamster, mulot, and campagnol, the study examines the stages of formation of zoonymic comparisons, phraseological units, paroemias, and zoometaphors.
