Recreating cellular dedifferentiation processes using weak electric fields

Year: 2026
Type: article
Abstract: Bioelectrical signals play a crucial role in controlling the behaviour and physiological processes of various types of cells, including the differentiation of stem cells into more specialised cell types. The potential for reversing the differentiation process through the application of bioelectrical signals could potentially allow the induction of pluripotent stem cells from differentiated cells. In hopes of expanding the existing body of research, the primary objective of this study was to replicate the in-vitro experiment conducted by Becker and Murray in 1967. The experiment focused on investigating the induction of cellular dedifferentiation in nucleated amphibian red blood cells through the application of small electrical currents. The results obtained substantiated Becker and Murray’s findings and offer further insights into the factors that potentially contribute to the process of cell dedifferentiation. This study highlights the need for further research to refine the mechanisms and technical aspects of electrically inducing dedifferentiation as well as explore the possibility of using small electric fields as a means to guide the redifferentiation process.
