Remainder, Estrangement, and the Pressure Toward Coherence in Analytic Process

Year: 2026
Type: article
Abstract: This paper examines moments in analytic process in which self-experience loses vitality when drawn too quickly into coherence through explanation or interpretation. Remainder names what psychic life leaves beyond every act of formulation-not only experience that has not yet found symbolic form, but the excess formulation itself generates-and whose vitality depends on not being prematurely assimilated into settled meaning. Consensus defense names the pressure within the analytic field to stabilize uncertainty through a prematurely shared understanding that protects analyst and patient from the anxiety of partially symbolized experience. The argument is developed as an elaboration of how unformulated experience works across the arc of formulation, rather than as a rival vocabulary: Where D. B. Stern's account centers the defensive refusal of formulation, this paper describes the complementary defensive operation, in which formulation itself is recruited, jointly and prematurely, against what remains. A clinical account shows how pressures toward explanation and reassurance can make experience feel less real-both by foreclosing meanings it might still have become and by installing formulations that do not tally with what is real in the patient-and how greater tolerance for incompletion may deepen the patient's relation to self-experience.
