Regulatory Strategy and Global Market Analysis of a Catheter-Based Renal Denervation System

Year: 2026
Type: article
Abstract: Hypertension is one of the most significant modifiable risk factors for cardiovascular disease, associated with serious complications including stroke, myocardial infarction, heart failure, and chronic kidney disease. A representative catheter-based renal denervation (RDN) system illustrates a device-based approach to hypertension treatment, reducing sympathetic nerve activity around the renal arteries rather than adding another antihypertensive medication to a patient's regimen. This article evaluates a device of this kind using the United States as the primary regulatory jurisdiction and Canada as the secondary jurisdiction, addressing technical device characteristics, classification rationale, regulatory strategy, clinical evidence requirements, labelling, strategic and market analysis including the clinical acceptance history that shaped this device category, global regulatory strategy, and project management. The article closes with recommendations for regulatory affairs professionals managing a device category whose clinical evidence history required overcoming substantial prior scientific skepticism. Keywords: renal denervation; hypertension; Class III/IV medical device; Premarket Approval; sham-controlled trial; Health Canada; regulatory artificial intelligence
