Abstract: "The trauma of your family of origin is written into your DNA and passed down the generations." This book checks the evidence behind that popular claim and asks where the resemblance between family members actually comes from and how it can change. It covers the maternal licking-and-grooming studies and the methylation of the exon 1₇ promoter of the hippocampal glucocorticoid-receptor gene, and the key fact shown by cross-fostering: the resemblance in styles of care between generations follows the rearing mother, not the birth mother, and is rebuilt through behaviour in each generation; the Dutch famine and Holocaust-offspring studies as intergenerational evidence from intrauterine exposure or with pathways that cannot be separated, the inconclusive evidence for transgenerational epigenetic inheritance in humans, and a strict distinction between "intergenerational" and "transgenerational" by type of exposure (F3 after exposure in pregnancy, F2 after exposure of a father or a non-pregnant mother); Falconer's formulas and maximum-likelihood ACE models for twin studies, the "three laws" of behavioural genetics and fifty years of pooled twin data (average heritability about 49 %, shared environment about 0.17), the rise in the heritability of intelligence with age, and how heritability changes with socioeconomic status, an interaction that is inconsistent outside the United States; how passive, evocative and active gene–environment correlations lead observational studies to overestimate the effect of the family environment (1.6- to 3.8-fold with illustrative parameters), and research on "genetic nurture"; equations for vertical, oblique and horizontal transmission in dual-inheritance theory (an illustrative half-life of about 2.4 generations for high-fidelity vertical transmission); crossover tests of differential susceptibility and "orchids and dandelions", statistical power and the failure of candidate-gene findings to replicate; and the real strength of negative intergenerational cycles (about a third; meta-analytic d = 0.45), detection bias in official records, and evidence for supportive partners, mentors and structured interventions as buffers, with a Markov model with filtering. The eight chapters are read beside the *Analects*' "by nature close, by habituation far apart", the *Family Instructions of the Yan Clan* ("shifted unseen and transformed in secret"), the image of the room of orchids in the *School Sayings of Confucius* and the *Records of Rites of the Elder Dai*, the Elder Dai's "what is formed in youth is like nature itself", the story of Mencius's mother in the *Biographies of Exemplary Women* and Yan Zhitui's account of prenatal instruction, correcting three classical attributions and explicitly not taking over the hierarchy, gender norms and corporal punishment of classical family instruction. They end with a four-step intergenerational-channel checklist and a pre-registered, assessor-blind randomised controlled trial comparing a brief parent training ("noticing one's own automatic stress reactions plus modelling a pause") with time-matched reading on child development (children aged 6–10; single primary outcome the share of intervals of child emotional dysregulation in a frustrating cooperative puzzle task, coded blind from video; 198 analysable dyads and 233 recruited families per arm; coding-reliability threshold and child-protection procedures pre-specified; decision rule written as code). Marked boxes separate published evidence, runnable Python calculations (16 programs, all checked), classical sources and the author's hypotheses. This book is not psychotherapy or a parenting diagnosis; genetic and epigenetic research cannot be used to label any family or individual, and heritability is a population statistic that says neither how much of a person "is determined by genes" nor that a trait cannot change. Disclosure.
