The Deep-Crust Lithosphere Trap — The Exponential Energy Cliff of Ultra-Deep Geothermal Sourcing and Tectonic Stress Arbitrage
Year: 2026
Type: article
Abstract: As global energy architectures face intermittent renewable saturation and grid instability, institutional capital is heavily pivoting toward advanced ultra-deep geothermal extraction. This monograph analyzes the structural failure mode known as "The Deep-Crust Lithosphere Trap." By evaluating ductile-brittle transition (DBT) wellbore collapse, extreme temperature-pressure material fatigue, and non-linear parasitic pumping losses, we demonstrate that ultra-deep drilling encounters an unyielding thermodynamic barrier. Furthermore, we construct an EROI (Energy Return on Investment) decay model proving that beyond critical crustal depths, the energy input required to extract heat exceeds the surface thermal yield, turning ultra-deep geothermal into a thermodynamic net-negative sink.
