Abstract: Achievement motivation and competitive anxiety are key psychological factors that influence match performance in tennis athletes. Achievement motivation drives athletes to pursue excellence, persist through challenges, and maintain focus during competition, while competitive anxiety comprising cognitive and somatic components can either facilitate or impair performance depending on its intensity and the athlete’s ability to regulate it. This article aims to examine the conceptual relationship between achievement motivation, competitive anxiety, and match performance among tennis players through a qualitative literature review. Relevant scientific articles, books, and expert perspectives on sport psychology, tennis performance, and psychological skills training published primarily within the last five years were analyzed descriptively. The synthesis indicates that high achievement motivation supports sustained effort, strategic decision-making, and resilience under pressure, whereas unmanaged competitive anxiety tends to disrupt concentration, increase muscle tension, and reduce shot consistency, particularly in critical moments such as break points or tie-breaks. However, optimal performance also depends on mental toughness, self-confidence, technical proficiency, and integrated psychological training. Therefore, coaching programs for tennis athletes should combine motivation enhancement, anxiety regulation techniques, and on-court practice rather than addressing these factors in isolation. This review offers a conceptual foundation for designing mental training interventions, although further empirical studies are needed to quantify the strength of these relationships in specific tennis populations.
