Type: article
Abstract: This article analyzes the incorporation of the gaucho figure into early 20th-century Argentine anarchist theater, with particular attention to the works of Alberto Ghiraldo and Rodolfo González Pacheco. Far from conceiving of art as an autonomous sphere, both playwrights used theater as an ideological and pedagogical tool for social transformation. Within this framework, the gaucho figure—traditionally linked to the national imaginary—was reinterpreted as an emblem of popular struggle, embodying the values of social justice, freedom, and class solidarity promoted by anarchism. This objective leads us to formulate the following question: How was the incorporation of the gaucho register articulated within libertarian dramaturgy? While the plays analyzed allow for multiple approaches, this work prioritizes their function as propaganda tools and as central vehicles of a particular ideology. This perspective allows us to understand them as texts that seek to engage and mobilize individuals, while simultaneously challenging and destabilizing the existing political and economic order. The core of this research corpus was constructed through the compilation of plays by Ghiraldo and Pacheco, authors who established the central thematic agenda for analyzing the inclusion of the gaucho imaginary within the anarchist sphere. By linking these materials with the selected bibliography, we will present the arguments that answer the research question and understand the connection between Creole tradition and libertarian activism.
