From Admired Figures to Ideal Partners: A Developmental Relational Prototype Model of Adult Mate Preferences

Year: 2026
Type: article
Study design: Observational Study
Abstract: Early interpersonal experiences may contribute to adult partner preferences through autobiographical memory, emotional learning, and relational schemas. This study proposes the Developmental Relational Prototype Model (DRPM), which conceptualizes admired interpersonal qualities encountered during childhood and adolescence as one possible developmental source of later relational expectations. Data were collected from 799 participants in India, Oman, and the United Arab Emirates during 2006–2010, comprising 394 unmarried adults aged 18–25 years and 405 married adults aged 35–55 years. Unmarried participants reported desired qualities in an ideal future partner, whereas married participants retrospectively reported positively valued qualities associated with admired opposite-sex figures. Among unmarried participants, culture and clean habits (58.11%) and love (51.00%) were the most frequently reported partner characteristics. Recall of at least one positively valued quality was reported by 91.62% of unmarried and 75.31% of married participants, with a significant association between marital-status group and recall, χ²(1, N = 799) = 38.32, p < .001, OR = 0.28. Findings provide preliminary support for DRPM while indicating associations rather than causal developmental effects.
