American Academy of Optometry Think Tank III: Current challenges and future directions in low vision research
Year: 2026
Type: article
Abstract: Current challenges and future directions in low vision research1 World Health Organization and the Vision Loss Expert Group of the Global Burden of Disease Study included uncorrected refractive errors as a cause of vision impairment. In their papers, they estimated 567 million people (7.6% of the world population) with acuity worse than 20/40 in 2020.The number reported in this paper (435 million) excluded the number of people with vision impairment due to uncorrected refractive errors, to be consistent with the definition of low vision.
