The Importance of Nurturing and Supporting Children’s Motor Skills During the Golden Years

Year: 2026
Type: article
Abstract: This study explores the importance of maintaining and nurturing motor development in children aged 4–5 years during the golden age of growth in Southeast Asia. Using a phenomenological approach, data were collected through field studies in Indonesia and Singapore, supported by literature from Scopus and WoS. Findings reveal that 83–85% of children demonstrate age-appropriate gross motor skills, such as running and hopping, while 96% exhibit fine motor abilities, including drawing, writing, and fastening clothes. Children engaging in moderate-to-vigorous physical activity for approximately 58 minutes daily achieved higher motor skill scores compared to less active peers. The study also highlights the role of free play, nutrition, and environmental support, with teachers and parents serving as key facilitators in structured and unstructured activities. These results emphasize that motor development is shaped not only by biological growth but also by cultural norms, family involvement, and access to safe play environments. The implications suggest that integrated educational and health policies are essential to optimize children’s readiness for formal schooling and social adaptation.
