Abstract: LIST OF THE TAXED POPULATION OF THE VILLAGES BACHOWICE AND MIEJSCE FROM 1673 Among the collection of copies within the Oświęcim castle court books, a nominal census of the villages of Bachowice and Miejsce, dating from 1673, has been preserved; it was compiled for the purposes of the subsidium charitativum tax introduced in that year. The compiler of this secular register, the commendarius (acting parish administrator) of Spytkowice, not only provided information on the farmholders and the number of household members subject to the tax, but also organised the list by including details on the farmholder, his wife, children, servants and lodgers (landless inmates). The author’s objectives were therefore to analyse the source as a remnant of the process of settling debts owed to the state treasury, and to examine the information it contained, comparing it with archival records held, amongst others, at the National Archives in Kraków, the Central Archives of Historical Records in Warsaw and the University Library in Toruń.
