The Role of Self-Compassion in Realizing the Flourishing of Islamic Education Guidance and Counseling Students at UIN Salatiga
Year: 2026
Type: article
Abstract: Students of Islamic Educational Guidance and Counseling (BKPI) are expected to possess psychological readiness as prospective counselors, yet excessive self-judgment often hinders the achievement of flourishing. This descriptive qualitative study aims to examine the role of self-compassion in fostering flourishing among BKPI students at UIN Salatiga. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews, non-participant observation, and documentation, with five active students from semesters 4, 6, and 8 selected through purposive sampling until data saturation was reached. The findings show that students with strong self-compassion were able to soothe themselves without self-blame during failure (self-kindness), understand hardship as a shared human experience (common humanity), and manage negative emotions in a balanced manner (mindfulness). Flourishing was reflected in positive emotions, active engagement, supportive relationships, meaning in life, and achievement orientation, sustained through reflection, rest, and sharing experiences with peers. From an Islamic perspective, these dynamics relate to patience (sabar), sincerity (ikhlas), and trust in God (tawakal) as sources of psychological strength, confirming self-compassion as a key foundation for flourishing of prospective counselors.
