An Overview on the Lift Coefficient of Airfoils at Low Reynolds Numbers

Year: 2025
Type: conference-paper
Abstract: The paper aims to synthesize and analyze the studies on the unsteady aerodynamic behavior of airfoils with a special attention to the lift coefficient variation at low Reynolds numbers concentrating mainly to the work performed in Aerodynamics Laboratory of METU in the last two decades. The previous studies investigated the unsteady flow characteristics around airfoils under steady external conditions at Reynolds number ranging from 100 to 100000 by highlighting the onset of vortex shedding and its dependence on the angle of attack. The analysis also extended to examine the wake patterns of airfoils across a range of incidence angles, providing insights into the transition from steady to unsteady flow regimes. By reviewing subsequent literature that builds upon these studies, this paper review the lift coefficient of airfoils at low Reynolds numbers in view of different numerical and experimental works in literature. The review also discusses the implications of these findings for the design and operation of micro air vehicles and other applications where low Reynolds number flows are prevalent.
