Herbal Ice Cream as an Innovative Dosage Form for Antipsychotic Medication Delivery: Formulation, Compliance Enhancement, and Therapeutic Integration – a Comprehensive Review
Year: 2026
Type: article
Abstract: Medication non-compliance represents a critical challenge in antipsychotic therapy, with approximately 40-50% of patients with schizophrenia and other psychotic disorders demonstrating inadequate adherence to prescribed regimens. Herbal ice cream formulations incorporating antipsychotic medications alongside complementary herbal botanicals present an innovative approach to enhance patient compliance while leveraging potential synergistic psychopharmacological benefits. This comprehensive review synthesizes current knowledge on the development, characterization, pharmaceutical stability, and clinical application of antipsychotic-containing herbal ice cream formulations. The vehicle of ice cream offers distinct advantages including enhanced palatability, masking of medication taste, improved patient acceptance particularly in populations resistant to conventional tablets, and potential for extended release formulation strategies. This review examines the pharmacological properties of commonly used antipsychotic medications, the adjunctive benefits of herbal ingredients (including adaptogens, anxiolytics, and cognitive enhancers), formulation strategies for maintaining antipsychotic efficacy and stability, regulatory frameworks governing such innovative dosage forms, and preliminary clinical evidence demonstrating improved medication adherence. This article provides evidence-based synthesis establishing herbal ice cream as a promising strategy to address antipsychotic medication non-compliance while incorporating supportive herbal therapeutics, with significant implications for improving therapeutic outcomes in psychiatric populations.
