A Structured Response Plan to Reduce Stress in the Police Force

Year: 2026

Study design: Clinical Trial
Abstract: Police personnel perform their duties in an occupational environment characterized by continuous responsibility, unpredictable situations, long working hours, public interaction, and exposure to potentially stressful and hazardous circumstances. Repeated exposure to such conditions may influence their psychological well-being, emotional stability, physical health, and ability to cope effectively with occupational demands. Hence, systematic efforts to strengthen stress-coping abilities among police personnel are important for both individual well-being and effective professional functioning. The present study was undertaken to develop and examine the effectiveness of a structured Stress Optimization Program (Stress-SOP) for police personnel. The study aimed to determine whether participation in the program could contribute to a reduction in perceived stress and improvement in psychological well-being. A pre-test–post-test resedesign was employed, involving a sample of 100 police personnel. An assessment of stress was conducted before the intervention, followed by the implementation of the Stress-SOP for a period of eight weeks. A post-test was administered after completion of the intervention to examine changes in the participants’ stress levelsThe Stress-SOP was designed as a multidimensional intervention rather than focusing on a single stress-management technique. The sessions included mindfulness practices, controlled breathing exercises, relaxation activities, sports and physical exercises, counselling for stress management, and practical guidance on work planning and time management. Expert-oriented and educational sessions were also incorporated to provide participants with greater awareness of occupational stress and practical approaches for managing stressful situations. The activities were selected with the intention of making stress-management practices simple, applicable, and suitable for integration into the routine lives of police personnel.A comparison of the pre-intervention and post-intervention assessments showed a reduction in stress levels among the participating police personnel after exposure to the Stress-SOP. The findings also indicated positive changes in aspects related to psychological well-being. The results suggest that combining mindfulness, breathing practices, physical activities, counselling, and occupational management strategies may provide police personnel with useful methods for coping with work-related stress. The study highlights the potential usefulness of a structured and comprehensive Stress-SOP as an intervention for occupational stress among police personnel. Incorporating such programs into police training, employee-welfare initiatives, and organizational support systems may help create greater awareness of stress, encourage healthier coping practices, and support the psychological well-being of personnel. The study therefore provides a basis for further research on structured stress-management interventions within the police workforce.
