Abstract: Purple Economy represents the vision of a caring and gender equal economy. In describing this vision, it references the symbolic color of feminist movements around the world and invokes the links to a “Green Economy.” Originally conceptualized by Ilkkaracan (2013), the articulation of the Purple Economy vision has been evolving through numerous writings and its adoption by women’s organizations as a training and advocacy tool. This chapter provides an integrated overview of the Purple Economy’s theoretical foundations, central policy pillars, and its transformative potential—especially in synergy with Green Economy frameworks. It lays out the macroeconomic implications of a Purple Economy policy agenda, focusing on the employment-generating potential of care investments as a response to the structural changes brought on by artificial intelligence (AI) and digitalization. It also highlights the complementarities and synergies between the Purple and Green Economies, advancing an expanded agenda of “peoplecare” and “earthcare.”
