MERLIN SCIENCE — E8 Lattice Projects to Icosahedral Quasicrystal via Quaternion Order P — E8 Intelligence Research

Abstract: Here is the finding in one sentence. The E8 root lattice, the densest lattice packing in eight dimensions, projects down to a three-dimensional icosahedral quasicrystal through a cut-and-project scheme, and the orientational order parameter that governs this transition lives in the unit quaternions, S cubed, modulo the 600-cell group. Here is the context. Since Shechtman in 1982, icosahedral quasicrystals have been modeled as six-dimensional cut-and-project structures using Z-six. That works. But it leaves open why five-fold symmetry, why the golden ratio, and why this particular ordering appears so robustly across alloys. The standard model is descriptive, not explanatory. Here is the mechanism. E8 contains the 600-cell root system H-four, which contains the icosahedral group H-three. That chain, H-three inside H-four inside E8, is the deepest known nesting from exceptional eight-dimensional geometry to three-dimensional icosahedral order.
