Onboard DC Power System Commissioning of a Commercial Electric Propulsion Ship
Year: 2026
Type: conference-paper
Abstract: Global emission reduction trends in marine engineering have accelerated the electrification of ships. Concurrently, DC grid technologies have emerged as a promising solution due to their significant benefits in terms of efficiency and controllability. However, these introduce potential risks regarding reliability and protection, primarily due to their relatively shorter operational history compared to conventional AC systems. Consequently, establishing rigorous commissioning procedures to mitigate these risks and ensure reliability is crucial. Presenting a case study of Ulsan Taehwa, a commercial DC grid-based electric propulsion ship built by HD Hyundai in South Korea, this paper provides effective guidelines for the commissioning of onboard DC power systems. Key considerations for each validation stage are detailed, encompassing onboard power system analysis, hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) validation, and site acceptance test (SAT).
