Modal Analysis for Damage Localization in 2D Structures: Localization Works, Early Warning Does Not

Year: 2026
Type: preprint
Abstract: We study whether modal analysis can detect and localize a structural defect from vibration measurements on a 2D membrane, using only a sparse set of sensors. The defect is modeled as a set of weakened edges in a discretized graph Laplacian. We compare three detectors: frequency shift, Modal Assurance Criterion (MAC), and curvature of the mode shape. Two results. First, none of the three detectors provides early warning: frequency shift grows only after the defect is already severe, MAC collapses to an uninformative plateau due to mode mixing, and curvature peaks only at intermediate damage. Second, curvature of the first mode localizes the defect: a sharp peak appears at the crack location on the 2D map, even though no sensor sits there. We conclude that in this geometry modal analysis is a localizer, not an early-warning system. The practical implication is that vibration-based structural health monitoring should be used to locate known damage, not to detect incipient damage, at least when sensor density is low and the defect is small.
