Implementation of Smart Irrigation Technology to Improve Water Efficiency in Community Agricultural Land

Year: 2026
Type: article
Abstract: Water scarcity and inefficient irrigation practices present significant challenges to sustainable agricultural management, particularly in community agricultural land. This study examines the implementation of smart irrigation technology to improve water-use efficiency through soil-moisture monitoring, automated irrigation control, and systematic water management. A field-based case study approach combining quantitative and qualitative methods is proposed to assess system functionality, irrigation practices, water consumption, and user experiences. The system integrates soil-moisture sensors, a microcontroller, and an automated water-delivery mechanism to regulate irrigation according to predefined moisture thresholds. Quantitative evaluation focuses on water consumption, irrigation frequency, soil-moisture conditions, and operational performance, while qualitative analysis explores implementation challenges, farmer participation, and technology adoption. The analysis highlights the potential of smart irrigation to support more precise water distribution, reduce unnecessary watering, and improve irrigation decision-making. Nevertheless, its effectiveness depends on sensor calibration, system reliability, maintenance capacity, affordability, and user training. Since verified field measurements are unavailable, the magnitude of water savings and productivity improvements remains undetermined. The study emphasizes the importance of empirical evaluation and locally adapted implementation strategies for sustainable community-based agricultural water management.
