An Online Application Model for Solution-Focused Sandtray Therapy

Year: 2026
Type: article
Abstract: Solution-focused sandtray therapy (SFSTT), while traditionally delivered in face-to-face settings, has attracted increasing attention in digital formats following the COVID-19 pandemic. This practice-oriented review aims to propose an online application framework for SFSTT by examining how its core therapeutic principles can be transferred to virtual environments. Online and virtual sandtray applications support clients in constructing symbolic representations while maintaining a focus on strengths, resources, and preferred future outcomes. Solution-focused techniques such as scaling, exception-finding, and future-oriented questioning can be integrated into online sessions, particularly to enhance engagement among children and adolescents. In this context, interactive Online SFSTT applications are examined in detail, and their therapeutic benefits and the potential stages of the intervention process are outlined. Overall, this review demonstrates that Online SFSTT offers a theoretically grounded and structured intervention model. It is noted that a five-stage model can be integrated with existing applications, such as Dr. Fried’s Online sandtray tool. The model is further highlighted as including intervention guidelines, sample questions, and practical indicators for platform use. The findings suggest that Online SFSTT may serve as both a complementary and alternative approach to face-to-face therapy, contributing to the expansion of accessible and strengths-based mental health services.
