Abstract: Based on textual comparison, the article identifies and classifies the methods of artistic veiling of religious and Sufi content in the work of the People’s Poet of Uzbekistan Omon Matjon (1943–2020) under Soviet censorship. The poet’s Soviet-era works, “Haqqush qichqirig‘i” (1979), “Gaplashadigan vaqtlar” (1986), “Pahlavon Mahmud” (1975) and “Beruniy” (1977), are compared with his post-independence works “Iymon yog‘dusi” (1995), “Xaloskor ruh” (2012) and “Najmiddin Kubro” (2011) and with the poet’s admissions in interviews. Six methods of veiling are distinguished: anonymization, the legend frame, the mask of a historical and scholarly figure, the transfer of sacred meaning to secular vocabulary, the replacement of the divine name with a periphrasis, and the postponement of the subject.
