Understanding How the Self-Regulation in Sport Practice Survey is Received by Mental Performance Consultants for Prospective Use in Applied Practice
Year: 2026
Type: preprint
Abstract: This study explored Mental Performance Consultants’ (MPCs’) perspectives on the prospective use of the Self-Regulation in Sport Practice (SRSP) survey when consulting adolescent athletes. Twelve Canadian MPCs completed mock SRSP surveys and interviews about the survey’s content and what they anticipated they could gain by using it with clients. Most of the MPCs claimed they could use the SRSP as an applied consulting resource. They believed that the SRSP could benefit the self-awareness of athletes and serve their information-gathering during case conceptualization. Most MPCs foresaw framing and enlarging SRSP statements/scores in joint discussion with a client, as part of triangulation, with some valuing the survey metrics for athletes and oneself. However, MPCs were philosophically divided on survey use, exposing uncertainty and negative preconceptions for some around quantitative assessment.
