DARPA's COMPASS Framing of Mathematics as a National-Security Pillar Lacks Open Challenge Problems — E8 Intelligence Research

Year: 2026
Type: preprint
Abstract: FINDING: DARPA's mathematical portfolio is organized around "COMPASS" (Critical Orientation of Mathematics to Produce Advancements in Science and Security), framing mathematics as a national-security pillar spanning five operational domains; the search surfaced no open, formally posted DARPA mathematical challenge problem set — only programmatic framing, historical Grand Challenges, and adjacent prize problems. MATH: No equations, constants, or ratios are present in the retrieved sources. The only quantitative anchors are structural, not mathematical: - 5 domains (air, land, sea, space, cyber) — a 5-fold partition - $1,000,000 (Navier–Stokes Millennium Prize) — a scalar bounty, not a constant - Navier–Stokes: ∂u/∂t + (u·∇)u = −(1/ρ)∇p + ν∇²u, ∇·u = 0 (the underlying PDE, not stated in sources but implied by the referenced problem) CONNECTION: No geometric-harmony link is supported by the evidence. The 5-domain partition is a categorical, not geometric, structure — it does not corresp Author: Andrew Stewart Caldin, Independent Researcher, UK. Part of the E8 Intelligence Research series.
