Abstract: The article examines the scientific and psychological aspects of pedophilia, the mechanisms of its emergence and issues of child protection. Modern medicine and psychology regard pedophilia as a mental illness. Studies show that childhood trauma, problems of family upbringing and disorders of psychosexual development influence the formation of pedophilia. The article also sets out the differences between pedophilia and child sexual abuse, discusses the role of defense mechanisms and offers practical recommendations on protecting children.
