Cross-Cultural Media Branding and Editorial Localization in Arabic-Language International News: An Integrative Critical Review and a Multilevel Analytical Framework

Year: 2026
Type: preprint
Abstract: This integrative critical review examines the relationship between cross-cultural editorial localization and media brand formation in Arabic-language international news. It brings together scholarship on media branding, journalistic translation, cultural proximity, political framing, platformization, and audience trust. Drawing on existing academic literature and institutional research, the paper examines how linguistic adaptation, cultural relevance, narrative framing, and platform-specific presentation may shape the positioning and interpretation of international news brands. RT Arabic serves as a bounded illustrative context rather than a source of newly collected empirical evidence. The study proposes a five-layer analytical framework encompassing institutional positioning, editorial localization, platform presentation, audience sense-making, and contextual constraints. It also develops a preliminary coding matrix and methodological recommendations for future comparative content analysis, newsroom interviews, and audience research. The review distinguishes between audience engagement, brand recognition, perceived relevance, credibility, and political endorsement. It argues that editorial localization may improve cultural accessibility and contextual relevance but cannot independently establish audience trust or political influence. The paper contributes a conceptual framework for investigating international media branding and cross-cultural journalism, particularly within Russian–Arab communication contexts. It identifies directions for future empirical research while acknowledging the limitations of a literature-based analytical approach.
