Digital Conflict in Marriage: Conflict Negotiation in Couples’ Social Media Communication

Year: 2026
Type: article
Abstract: This study examines the process of digital conflict negotiation in marital communication on social media, encompassing the forms and sources of conflict, the negotiation process, and conflict-handling styles based on the Thomas-Kilmann Conflict Mode Instrument (TKI) framework. Employing a descriptive-interpretative qualitative approach within a constructivist paradigm, the research involved 15 couples actively using WhatsApp and Instagram who had experienced conflict triggered by digital interaction. Data were collected through in-depth interviews and observation. The findings reveal three main insights. First, sources of digital conflict stem from response dynamics and text-message misinterpretation due to the paucity of non-verbal cues, interaction with third parties, and oversharing behaviour that breaches domestic privacy boundaries. Second, all participants implemented media switching strategies to transition discussions from digital platforms to face-to-face communication through pillow talk and intimate dialogue, which proved effective for clarification and emotional restoration. Third, conflict-handling styles were contextual and phased: avoiding was utilized constructively as a cooling-off period in the initial phase of digital conflict, whereas collaborating and compromising dominated during face-to-face negotiations. This study asserts that digital conflict does not merely signal relational failure; rather, it can be managed constructively through emotional regulation, awareness of digital media limitations, and a commitment to prioritizing face-to-face communication as an authentic space for resolution. As a practical implication, couples are advised to establish digital etiquette agreements and refrain from discussing sensitive issues via text message.
