Abstract: In recent years, the key role of breastfeeding in establishing a healthy infant gut microbiome has been recognized. Breast milk contains various components: proteins, fats, carbohydrates and immunoglobulins. Important constituents of breast milk are HMOs, such as GOS, which are only partially absorbed in the small intestine and mostly reach the large intestine. The gut microbiome is formed mainly at an early age and plays an important role in maintaining the body’s homeostasis. Initial colonization of the gut influences the development of the child’s immune system, metabolic processes and neuropsychological development. Breastfeeding is considered one of the most important factors influencing the formation of the gut microbiome, since breast milk contains not only nutrients but also biologically active components that promote the establishment of beneficial microflora.
