Abstract: This article considers the importance of intellectual competencies, the problems of the higher education system and practical approaches to solving them. Intellectual competencies are students’ abilities to think critically, solve problems, be creative and apply their knowledge in practice. The development of intellectual competencies in the higher education system faces a number of problems: traditional teaching methods, the mismatch between education and the labor market, a shortage of resources, insufficient teacher qualifications, low student motivation, problems in the system for assessing the quality of education, insufficient integration of technology, and social and cultural barriers. These problems can be solved by updating teaching methods, strengthening the links between education and the labor market, improving the resource base and raising teachers’ qualifications. Such approaches are of great importance in preparing students for future success.
