The FIRST Framework for Choosing a Venture's First Product: Eleven Steps to Reduce Start-up Risk

Year: 2026
Type: article
Abstract: Many founders start with several products so as not to miss potential opportunities, choose the product they personally prefer, or imitate a successful competitor without understanding why it succeeds. This paper argues that demand does not imply opportunity, and that opportunity does not imply the venture's ability to compete for it. It presents the FIRST framework, an eleven-step path to choosing a venture's first product: define the geographic market and the candidate sectors; identify three competitors per sector in distinct roles (product leader, market leader and challenger); define the target segment, its problem with each competitor and a solution hypothesis for each problem; ask whether the venture can escape direct confrontation with the strongest competitor; score the sectors; choose the product; craft the message; and select the channel. The paper links the framework to research on market segmentation, competitor identification and the jobs-to-be-done perspective, offers an illustrative example, and sets out its limits as a method for structuring the decision rather than a guarantee of success.
