What did the first Christmas sound like?
Year: 2026
Type: article
Abstract: This short educational resource invites young people to "listen" to the Christmas story in Luke 2:1–20. Popular images and carols such as "Silent Night" present the nativity as a scene of perfect stillness. Read alongside what we know of daily life in first-century Bethlehem, Luke's account suggests a far noisier setting. The piece explores three sounds: a small hillside town crowded by the Roman census; the lower room of a family house, shared with animals, where Jesus was laid in a stone manger; and the "heavenly host" (Greek stratia, "army") whose appearance terrified the shepherds. It includes a "Did you know?" section and discussion questions for classrooms, youth groups and families. It is based on the author's longer research article on the soundscape of Luke's nativity, now in preparation.
