Phason elasticity as the physical signature of higher-dimensional embedding in quasicrystals — E8 Intelligence Research

Abstract: FINDING: Five-fold rotational symmetry is crystallographically forbidden in periodic lattices; quasicrystals evade this via aperiodic long-range order whose elasticity is governed by phason modes — the physical signature of higher-dimensional (H4→E8) embedding. MATH: - Crystallographic restriction (from the video proof): for a rotation by θ mapping lattice to itself, A'B' = a·cos θ must be an integer multiple of a. For 5-fold, θ = 2π/5 = 72°, cos 72° = (√5−1)/4 = 1/(2φ) ≈ 0.309. This is irrational → no integer n satisfies n·a = a·cos θ → 5-fold forbidden in any 1D/2D/3D periodic lattice. - Golden ratio: φ = (1+√5)/2 = 1.6180339887…, with φ² = φ+1 = 2.618…, 1/φ = φ−1 = 0.618…, 1/φ² = 0.381966… ≈ 0.382. - Coxeter group H4: order 14400 = 120², rank 4, Coxeter matrix with m₁₂ = 5 (the 5-fold bond). H4 is the symmetry group of the 600-cell and 120-cell. - H4 ⊂ H4 × H4 ⊂ E8: the E8 root system (240 roots, rank 8, order 696729600) contains H4 ⊕ H4 as a maximal subgroup; the 240 E8 roots deco Author: Andrew Stewart Caldin, Independent Researcher, UK.
