Trauma-Informed Leadership Tools: Advancing Psychological Hygiene Through Care Leadership

Year: 2026
Type: article
Abstract: Over the past decade, though trauma-informed care (TIC) has garnered increased interest across health, education, and social service sectors, its discussion in corporate and technology-driven organisational contexts remains limited. Leadership that is not trauma-informed risks increased stress and re-traumatisation within workplaces. The article argues that leaders play a central role in responding to the trauma needs of employees in a modern workplace. We review existing TIC frameworks, arguing that a majority of them are based on Western socio-cultural assumptions, often presenting challenges in hierarchical, collectivist, and resource-constrained settings such as India. Theoretically, the article situates trauma-informed leadership at the intersection of organisational psychology, leadership studies, and workplace well-being, emphasizing the importance of contextual adaptation in global knowledge transfer. Practically, it aims to provide leaders and human resource practitioners an actionable tool for integrating evidence-based trauma-informed learning into policies, practices, and daily interactions while keeping in mind that the leadership has certain limitations. Overall, the article presents psychological safety as a shared responsibility and makes it practically possible by adapting the TIC frameworks to Indian socio-cultural realities.
