Exploring Wooden Eggs as an Alternative Painting Medium : an Internship Study at Anggara Painting
Year: 2026
Type: article
Abstract: This study explores the use of wooden eggs as a three-dimensional painting medium at Anggara Painting, focusing on their material characteristics, the adaptation of painting techniques to curved surfaces, and the stages of artistic production. The study employed a qualitative descriptive approach within an internship program. Data were collected through observation, interviews, documentation, and a literature review, then analyzed descriptively to identify the material properties and production processes associated with wooden egg painting. The findings indicate that wooden eggs provide a lightweight, smooth surface suitable for acrylic paint application, while their curved three-dimensional form presents specific considerations for sketching, coloring, detailing, and maintaining visual consistency across the surface. The creative process consisted of media preparation, sketching, coloring, detailing, and finishing. Through these stages, the study produced painted wooden egg artworks that demonstrate the application of painting techniques to a non-flat medium. The internship also provided practical experience in material preparation, artistic production, finishing, and product development. Although the artworks may have potential as decorative items and tourism souvenirs, their commercial viability was not assessed through market analysis or consumer evaluation. This study contributes practical insights into the adaptation of painting techniques to curved wooden surfaces and the use of wooden eggs as an alternative medium for three-dimensional artistic exploration.
