Abstract: Introduction. Line start permanent magnet synchronous motors (LSPMSMs) are motors with many operational advantages, such as high efficiency, high power factor, high power density, and self-starting capability. Therefore, with the current trend of energy savings, this type of motor is a viable solution to replace induction motors. Problem. Besides advantages, the motors have some drawbacks that need improvement, such as difficulty in starting and the potential for irreversible demagnetization (ID) of the permanent magnets (PMs). Additionally, the motors are significantly affected by the supply voltage. Therefore, if the design only considers the rated voltage, it will not accurately reflect the actual operational conditions. Goal. To study the impact of long-duration voltage variations (LDVVs) in the distribution network on the working characteristics of LSPMSM without considering demagnetization as well as to evaluate the influence of LDVVs on the risk of PM demagnetization in LSPMSMs. Methodology. The solution of the problem was carried out through analytical analysis combined with simulations using the finite element method in Ansys Maxwell software. Results. The research results indicate a significant impact of LDVV levels on motor operation. The study applied to a LSPMSM 2.2 kW, 2p=4 show that as the voltage increases, the motor starts easily, but the operating efficiency is reduced. Additionally, an increase in voltage can lead to ID PMs when starting at elevated operating temperatures. Scientific novelty. The main contributions include assessing the impact of LDVV not only on the operating characteristics, but also on the ID capability of the PMs in LSPMSM. Practical value. The results of this study can be utilized in the design of LSPMSM to not only ensure operational characteristics but also to prevent ID due to LDVV in the power grid.
