Amal Bio-Energy: Hydrogen production throughout methane pyrolysis from purified biogas of agricultural wastes, for distributed generation
Year: 2026
Type: preprint
Abstract: Current hydrogen production relies heavily on the carbon-intensive steam-methane reforming (SMR) process, while agriculture remains a leading source of potent methane emissions. Addressing this dual challenge, this project introduces a novel prototype for a decentralized, carbon-neutral hydrogen generation system. The process begins with a biodigester that uses agricultural waste to produce biogas, which is then purified to yield biomethane. This biomethane, a renewable source of methane, is subsequently fed into a methane pyrolysis reactor. This method heats the biomethane without combustion, separating it into ultra-clean hydrogen and solid carbon. The entire process, from pyrolysis to hydrogen compression and storage, is designed to be powered by renewable energy, ensuring a zero-emission energy pathway. By integrating agricultural waste valorization with advanced hydrogen production, this prototype offers a powerful solution to multiple systemic issues. It not only mitigates significant methane emissions from farming but also bypasses the need for fossil fuels in hydrogen generation. This in-situ production model facilitates a distributed energy generation framework, democratizing the energy transition and enabling self-sufficiency in agricultural communities. Ultimately, this project presents a scalable and sustainable approach to producing clean hydrogen, fostering a decarbonized future while turning climate liability into a valuable energy and industrial resource.
